.ua Domain: Ukraine ccTLD Guide
.ua is the country-code top-level domain for Ukraine.
Overview
Used by Ukrainian brands, businesses and individuals, mostly through third-level names such as .com.ua.
Hostmaster runs .ua. The domain was registered in the root zone on 1 December 1992, and geographic domains were allocated at a conference in Slavsko in January 1993. Two-letter regional names such as if.ua for ivano-frankivsk.ua followed in December 1997. The .ua zone was signed with DNSSEC on 13 April 2012.
A second-level name such as example.ua may be registered only by the holder of a trademark valid in Ukraine, and the name must match the mark. If the mark uses non-Latin characters, its Latin transliteration counts as the spelling. A Ukrainian registrar describes this as meant to reduce cybersquatting. Registration is handled manually by the registry or via registrars, and takes one to five days.
Third-level labels have no trademark requirement. They include com.ua, net.ua, org.ua, edu.ua, gov.ua, in.ua and regional names such as kyiv.ua and od.ua. Some regional domains are mirrored, so registering one reserves its counterpart for the same registrant. Names are 1 to 63 characters of Latin letters, digits and hyphens. A domain dispute resolution policy exists.
The Cyrillic .укр extension, a separate Ukrainian top-level domain, became active in 2013. On 26 February 2022 the registry moved domain servers out of Kyiv for continuity during the Russian invasion. A published figure puts .ua at 549,180 registered domains in January 2021. Registrars disagree on whether WHOIS privacy is available, so check before registering.
Who can register
A name directly under .ua requires a trademark valid in Ukraine, and the name must match the mark exactly; registrars ask for a company licence or ID card plus trademark documents. Third-level names such as .com.ua need no trademark.
Second-level endings: Also .com.ua, .kyiv.ua and others.
Rules and prices change. This summary is general information, not legal advice: confirm the current policy with the registry before you buy. The registry's website is hostmaster.ua. The official record for .ua is in the IANA root zone database.
