ccTLD FAQ
Quick answers to the questions people ask most about country-code domains.
What is a ccTLD?
A country-code top-level domain: a two-letter ending such as .uk, .de or .jp, assigned to a country or territory. Read the complete guide.
How many country-code domains are there?
About 250: 248 two-letter, Latin-script codes in the root zone at last count, plus versions in other scripts. See the full directory.
Is .com a country code?
No. .com is a generic TLD. The United States' country code is .us.
Why does the UK use .uk instead of .gb?
.uk was assigned before the internet settled on the ISO 3166 list, where the UK's code is GB. A .gb domain exists but is not used.
Is .io a country code?
Yes. .io belongs to the British Indian Ocean Territory, even though most people use it as a tech ending.
Is .ai a country code?
Yes. .ai belongs to Anguilla, a British Overseas Territory in the Caribbean.
Can I register a ccTLD from another country?
Often, but not always. Some are open to anyone, others need a local address or business. See who can register.
Does a ccTLD help SEO?
It tells search engines which country you are targeting. It does not guarantee better rankings. See ccTLDs and SEO.
Are ccTLDs a good investment?
Some names are; many are not. Value depends on the name, the buyer market, renewal costs and real comparable sales. See investing in ccTLDs.
What happens to a ccTLD if a country changes?
Country-code domains follow the ISO list, so a change in a country's status can eventually lead to a new code and the old one being phased out. Past examples include .yu (Yugoslavia) and .an (Netherlands Antilles), both retired after transition periods.
Is this site a registry or registrar?
No. ccTLD.it.com is an independent educational site. We don't sell domains. Always confirm rules with the official registry.
How can I value a specific domain?
Look at completed sales of similar names and get a second opinion. TLD.is offers AI appraisals that explain the reasoning.
