Used by Spanish businesses, organisations and individuals, and by international firms that want a clear signal of activity in Spain.

The .es domain was introduced on 14 April 1988 and is managed by Red.es, a Spanish public entity attached to the ministry responsible for the digital economy. Day-to-day domain administration is handled through the Network Information Centre of Spain (ESNIC) and the dominios.es service. Names are sold through accredited registrars rather than by the registry directly.

For many years second-level registration was tightly restricted: a name had to match a Spanish trademark, a business or association name, or a person's given name plus at least one surname. A staged liberalisation, completed by the end of 2005, removed those limits for names registered directly under .es. Spanish characters such as ñ, ç and accented vowels have been accepted since October 2007.

Categories also exist below .es. These include .com.es for commercial use, .nom.es for personal use, .org.es for non-commercial organisations, .edu.es for education and .gob.es, which is restricted to government bodies. Disputes over .es names can be handled through an extrajudicial conflict-resolution system as well as the courts; check dominios.es for the current procedure name and rules.

One published count gave 2,134,104 registered .es domains as of 31 July 2025. The extension signals Spain rather than the Spanish language as a whole, which matters for businesses targeting Latin America, where .mx, .ar and other national domains are more natural choices.

Who can register

Registry guidance describes the extension as intended for people and organisations with a link or interest in Spain, but since the 2005 liberalisation there has been no residency or citizenship requirement at the second level. Restricted labels such as .gob.es have their own rules.

Rules and prices change. This summary is general information, not legal advice: confirm the current policy with the registry before you buy. The registry's website is www.dominios.es. The official record for .es is in the IANA root zone database.

Before you buy a .es name

  • Check the renewal price as well as the first-year price. Our cost calculator shows what a name really costs over time.
  • Make sure you meet the eligibility rules yourself, without relying on a trustee if you can avoid it.
  • Search for trademarks and for the same name in .com.
  • Say the name out loud: will people type it correctly?
