.fi Domain: Finland ccTLD Guide
.fi is the country-code top-level domain for Finland.
Overview
Used by Finnish businesses, organisations and individuals, and by international firms that want a Finland-focused address.
The .fi domain was introduced on 17 December 1986, after an application sent on 4 December 1986 by the Finnish Unix Users Group in Tampere. Administration passed from Tampere University of Technology to FICIX and later to the state authority Traficom, which runs the register for .fi. Registration works through registrars.
Restrictions were relaxed on 1 September 2003, and private individuals could register from 1 March 2006. Registration opened to holders of any domicile in September 2016. Names are taken at the second level. The current Traficom regulation, issued on 17 June 2025 and in force from 18 August 2025, replaced the earlier FICORA regulation 68/2016 M.
Names may use a to z, 0 to 9 and hyphens, plus national characters including å, ä and ö, which were allowed from 1 September 2005, and some Sami and other letters listed in the regulation. Native-character names are stored as Punycode, and the registry advises keeping an ASCII form as the main website and mail domain. DNSSEC support began in late 2010.
Published figures put .fi at 554,434 registered names on 21 March 2025. In the early 1990s the domain was known for anon.penet.fi, an anonymous remailer, and Spotify uses the domain hack spoti.fi. Traficom removed more than 100 domains in April 2026 where the register listed a proxy rather than the real holder.
Who can register
Since September 2016, individuals and organisations from anywhere in the world can hold a .fi name through a registrar. The recorded holder must be the real holder of the name, so proxy or privacy services cannot be used, and holders must give an email address for official notices.
Rules and prices change. This summary is general information, not legal advice: confirm the current policy with the registry before you buy. The registry's website is www.traficom.fi/en/communications/fi-domains. The official record for .fi is in the IANA root zone database.
