Used by Danish businesses, public bodies and individuals; it is Denmark's main domain and carries a strong local trust signal.

The .dk domain was created on 14 July 1987. Early management was with the Danish Unix user group DKUUG and then the ISP DKnet, which was sold to Tele Danmark in February 1996. Responsibility then passed to the Association of Danish Internet Service Providers. DIFO (Dansk INTERNET Forum) was founded on 1 July 1999 and bought DK Hostmaster A/S that year.

Restrictions on who could register were removed in January 1997. The Danish Domain Names Act took effect in 2005 and was revised in 2014, making the registry responsible for keeping accurate contact details for Danish registrants. Identity checks at registration were introduced in 2017. DK Hostmaster renamed itself Punktum dk in April 2023; its licence to administer .dk was last extended in 2019, to run until 2026.

Names are registered at the second level. The registry does not recommend or endorse third-party second-level domains such as .com.dk. Letters such as æ, ø, å, ö, ä, ü and é are allowed, though some registrars do not support them. Disputes go to the Danish Complaints Board for Domain Names, and DNSSEC has been in use since July 2010.

Published figures put .dk at 1,460,530 registered names on 15 December 2022. The registry counted about 41,000 names at the end of 1997 and 140,000 by the end of 1999, showing how quickly use grew once registration was opened up.

Who can register

The registry's rules allow applicants from anywhere to register through a registrar, but identification is required: Danish customers log in with MitID, and customers from abroad undergo a risk assessment. European organisations are usually asked for a VAT number.

Rules and prices change. This summary is general information, not legal advice: confirm the current policy with the registry before you buy. The registry's website is punktum.dk. The official record for .dk is in the IANA root zone database.
