Used by Swedish businesses, public bodies and individuals, and by overseas firms that want a Swedish presence; Sweden has a very high rate of .se use.

The .se domain was introduced on 4 September 1986 and is operated by The Swedish Internet Foundation (Internetstiftelsen, formerly known as .SE). Registration is through approved registrars. Strict rules from 1996 limited registration to nationally registered organisations until April 2003, when the registry liberalised to a first-come, first-served system open to any person or entity.

Names are registered directly at the second level. Former second-level domains including county letters (such as a.se), .org.se, .pp.se, .tm.se, .parti.se and .press.se remain in limited use, and some, such as domstol.se for the Swedish courts, are still active. Domain names may be 2 to 63 characters long, and strings shaped like Swedish personal identity numbers (xxxxxx-xxxx) cannot be registered.

Å, ä and ö have been allowed since 2003, with internationalised domain names accepted from October 2003 and further characters for Finnish, Meänkieli, Sami, Romani and Yiddish added from 2007. Dispute cases go to an alternative dispute-resolution procedure. For holders who are private individuals or sole traders, no contact details are shown in the public lookup.

Published figures put .se at 1,466,636 registered names on 31 March 2024. .se was the first top-level domain to offer DNSSEC. Many English words ending in -se were registered early and now change hands on the secondary market, and the extension is used for domain hacks.

Who can register

Any person or legal entity may apply if they can be identified, for example with a personal identity number, a corporate identity number or an entry in an official register. The registry's conditions list additional requirements for the remaining second-level names such as .pp.se, which needs a Swedish personal identity or coordination number.

Rules and prices change. This summary is general information, not legal advice: confirm the current policy with the registry before you buy. The registry's website is internetstiftelsen.se. The official record for .se is in the IANA root zone database.
