Portuguese businesses and individuals use it as their main national domain, and it also serves Portuguese-language audiences abroad.

The .pt domain was delegated to FCCN on 30 June 1988. Associação DNS.PT, a private not-for-profit association, succeeded FCCN on 9 May 2013 and now manages the domain. Its members include the Science and Technology Foundation, the Digital Economy Association and the Portuguese Consumer Protection Association.

Names can be registered directly under .pt, which became unrestricted in 2012, or beneath second-level labels such as .com.pt, .org.pt, .edu.pt and .gov.pt. Under the 2018 rules, .gov.pt was for government bodies and .edu.pt for teaching establishments. The 2021 rules removed edu.pt and org.pt from new registration, while existing names remain valid and can be renewed.

Names must be 2 to 63 characters, using letters, digits and hyphens, with no hyphen at the start or end. Portuguese special characters such as á, ã, ç, é, ê and õ are permitted. DNSSEC is supported. The registry held 2,104,387 domains in February 2026.

Disputes can be taken to voluntary institutional arbitration with ARBITRARE, agreed at registration, using tests of identical or confusing similarity, lack of legitimate rights and bad faith. The 2021 rules require data on legal-person registrants to be shown in WHOIS, and allow a court injunction to suspend a disputed name.
