Used by Norwegian businesses, organisations and individuals, and treated by the registry as a domain for entities with a real presence in Norway.

The .no domain was introduced on 17 March 1987. Norid, based in Trondheim, has run it since 1996 as a division of Uninett and became a separate limited company in 2003. Since 2021 Norid has been owned directly by the Norwegian Ministry of Digitalisation and Public Governance. Norid also manages .sj and .bv, which are not open to registration. Registrars were introduced in 1999.

Registrations may be made directly under .no. Organisations can hold up to 100 such names and individuals up to five, since individuals gained direct registration in June 2014. Category and geographical second-level domains also exist, such as museum.no for museums, and priv.no is available to individuals. Second-level registrations under these require a relevant tie to the category or area.

Names must be 2 to 63 characters, using a to z, 0 to 9 and hyphens, with hyphens not allowed at the start or end. Norwegian and Sami letters have been permitted since 2004, and all-numeric names since 2007. DNSSEC has been available since 9 December 2014. Disputes are handled after registration by the Alternative Dispute Resolution Committee or the courts.

Norid reported 843,749 registered domains on 24 December 2022. The registry became well known for the long-running dispute over co.no, registered by a private company in 2001 and ruled by Norwegian courts in 2012 not to be revocable by Norid.

Who can register

Organisations need a Norwegian organisation number from the Brønnøysund Register Centre and a Norwegian address. Individuals must be at least 18, be in the National Population Register and have a Norwegian national identity number. Foreign parties cannot register directly, though some use a Norwegian trustee, who then becomes the legal holder.

Second-level endings: Also geographic domains such as .oslo.no.

Rules and prices change. This summary is general information, not legal advice: confirm the current policy with the registry before you buy. The registry's website is www.norid.no. The official record for .no is in the IANA root zone database.

Before you buy a .no name

  • Check the renewal price as well as the first-year price. Our cost calculator shows what a name really costs over time.
  • Make sure you meet the eligibility rules yourself, without relying on a trustee if you can avoid it.
  • Search for trademarks and for the same name in .com.
  • Say the name out loud: will people type it correctly?
