.hu Domain: Hungary ccTLD Guide
.hu is the country-code top-level domain for Hungary.
Overview
Used by Hungarian businesses, organisations and individuals, and by European firms targeting Hungarian customers.
The Council of Hungarian Internet Providers (ISzT) performs the regulatory tasks for .hu. Its subsidiary, ISzT Nonprofit Kft., is the registry that registers and maintains domain records and runs the Hungarian central name servers. The domain was introduced on 7 November 1990.
Applicants deal with accredited registrars, who contract with them for registration and maintenance. Direct .hu registration is limited to applicants from EU, Council of Europe, EEA and EFTA states or neighbouring countries, or those with a Hungarian domiciliation permit. Foreign legal entities qualify if established there, or if they hold a trademark protected in Hungary. Others can register under public second-level labels.
The applicant or the administrative contact must have a Hungarian postal address, and some registrars sell this as a service. Second-level labels include co.hu, org.hu, info.hu and shop.hu, among about 30 public labels. The label tm.hu is restricted to trademark owners. Natural-person applicants must be over 18, except in cases such as inheritance.
Names must be 2 to 63 characters and may use unaccented a to z, digits, hyphens and the Hungarian accented lowercase letters á, é, í, ó, ö, ő, ú, ü and ű, stored in punycode. Names cannot start or end with a hyphen. The registry operates its own complaints procedure, with a Domain Decision Maker and a Registration Decision Maker, rather than the UDRP.
Who can register
Direct .hu names are open to natural persons aged 18 or over and legal entities from EU, Council of Europe, EEA and EFTA states and Hungary's neighbours, or holders of a Hungarian domiciliation permit. Anyone may register under second-level labels such as co.hu, and a Hungarian postal address is needed.
Second-level endings: Also .co.hu, .org.hu, .info.hu and many other second-level names.
