.mx Domain: Mexico ccTLD Guide
.mx is the country-code top-level domain for Mexico.
Overview
Used by Mexican businesses and individuals, and by international brands targeting Mexico, usually as .com.mx or since 2009 as a plain .mx name.
The .mx domain was delegated to Mexico on 1 February 1989, with the Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey (ITESM) as its original sponsor. NIC México, the operator today, took over management from ITESM in November 2003. Names are sold through accredited registrars, and the registry requires contact details for registrant, administrative, technical and billing roles.
For many years registrations were made only at the third level, under categories such as .com.mx, .org.mx, .net.mx, .edu.mx and .gob.mx. In 2009 the registry opened direct second-level registration under .mx in three phases: a sunrise period (1 May to 31 July), a waiting period in August and initial registration from 1 September to 31 October 2009, after which it opened to the public.
Disputes are handled under the registry's Local Dispute Resolution Policy (LDRP). Registrars list only ASCII letters, digits and hyphens and do not offer internationalised names; check the registry's current policy. DNSSEC is supported by the registry, although some registrars do not offer it.
Published figures put .mx at 1,339,046 registered names on 19 December 2022. It is the natural choice for Mexican audiences. In the registry's category figures, .com.mx still accounted for about two thirds of names and direct .mx names about 30 per cent.
Who can register
Registry rules and registrar documentation indicate that .mx and .com.mx are open to anyone, with no citizenship or residency requirement. Some categories are restricted, such as .gob.mx for government bodies and .net.mx for qualifying telecoms entities.
Second-level endings: Also .com.mx and others.
Rules and prices change. This summary is general information, not legal advice: confirm the current policy with the registry before you buy. The registry's website is www.registry.mx. The official record for .mx is in the IANA root zone database.
