NIC Argentina is the government body responsible for administering the domain name registry in Argentina and for running the country's DNS. Direct registration under .ar was approved on 10 September 2019 by Resolution 45/2019 of the Legal and Technical Secretariat, with Disposition 201/2019 setting the rules, schedules and procedures.

Direct registration opened in stages. A sunrise period ran from 11 September to 9 November 2019 for holders of .com.ar, .net.ar, .org.ar, .int.ar or .tur.ar names registered before 1 December 2015. An interest period ran from 25 November 2019 to 23 January 2020, with lotteries run by the Buenos Aires City Lottery for contested names. General availability began on 23 February 2020.

Before 2020, Argentine names could be registered only beneath second-level labels such as .com.ar, .net.ar, .org.ar, .int.ar and .tur.ar. Those labels remain in use. The .gob.ar and .mil.ar labels were excluded from the sunrise scheme. A 2019 summary gave a length of 4 to 50 characters for direct names, so confirm against the current rules before choosing a name.

Domains registered during the sunrise and interest stages could not be transferred to another holder for two years from registration. In 2019 the registration procedures required a tax-authority user and fiscal key (clave fiscal) for Argentine users. Dispute procedures are published on nic.ar.
