Used by Brazilian companies and individuals, almost always as .com.br, for sites aimed at Brazil's large Portuguese-speaking market.

The .br domain was delegated to Brazil in 1989. Policy is set by CGI.br, the Brazilian Internet Steering Committee, and its executive arm NIC.br has handled administration and operations since 2005. The registry department is Registro.br. As with most country-code domains, the rules are set nationally, here by CGI.br, rather than by ICANN.

Registrations are made almost entirely at the third level under a category. There are 147 second-level domains in eleven categories as of August 2025, including .com.br for business, .org.br for the third sector, .net.br, .adv.br for lawyers, .edu.br and .gov.br. In 2001 the committee stopped automatic registration at the second level, and direct registrations under .br itself are a very small fraction.

Names must be 2 to 26 characters long, excluding the category, and cannot consist only of digits or start or end with a hyphen. Accented Portuguese characters have been accepted since 2005. Accented and unaccented versions of a name are treated as equivalent, so only one holder can have them unless the same entity holds both. Domain privacy is generally not available for .br names.

As of 9 September 2024, .br had 5,388,244 registered domains, of which .com.br accounted for about 93 per cent. That makes it among the largest country-code domains. Overseas buyers who cannot meet the local requirements sometimes use a Brazilian trustee service, in which the trustee is the registrant of record.

Who can register

Registrants need a Brazilian CPF (individuals) or CNPJ (legal entities), checked against government records, plus a contact address in Brazil. Foreign companies can register only by following extra procedures, including appointing a legal representative in Brazil and supplying legalised, translated documents.

Second-level endings: Mostly .com.br, .net.br, .org.br and many other categories.

Rules and prices change. This summary is general information, not legal advice: confirm the current policy with the registry before you buy. The registry's website is registro.br. The official record for .br is in the IANA root zone database.

Before you buy a .br name

  • Check the renewal price as well as the first-year price. Our cost calculator shows what a name really costs over time.
  • Make sure you meet the eligibility rules yourself, without relying on a trustee if you can avoid it.
  • Search for trademarks and for the same name in .com.
  • Say the name out loud: will people type it correctly?
