Used by Vietnamese businesses, organisations and individuals, and by foreign companies operating in or selling to Vietnam.

VNNIC is the registry for .vn and operates under the government ministry responsible for communications. .vn was introduced on 14 April 1994, and VNNIC took over the domain from VNPT in 2000, when the government established the centre.

Names can be registered at the second level (name.vn) or third level beneath labels such as .com.vn, .biz.vn, .net.vn, .org.vn, .edu.vn, .gov.vn, .info.vn, .pro.vn and .name.vn. A registrar reports that second-level names must be 3 to 63 characters and third-level names 1 to 63 characters, and that .edu.vn became restricted to the education sector from 10 February 2026.

VNNIC may cancel registrations of names that threaten national interests or breach social morality or national culture, according to registrar guidance. Registrars also say that foreign-held names need a wet-signed registration form and a colour scan of supporting documents, and that .vn names cannot be deleted by partners once registered. Terms run from 1 to 10 years.

Published figures give about 618,000 registered .vn domains as of the third quarter of 2025. Dispute handling is described in older registry rules as a complaint to VNNIC, which encourages agreement between the parties and otherwise decides under current law; check the registry for the current procedure.

Who can register

Registrars report that .vn is open to local and foreign individuals and organisations with no local presence, but paperwork is required: a business certificate for organisations or a passport copy for individuals, plus a signed registration form. Registration is finalised only after VNNIC verifies the documents.
