Used by Israeli businesses, organisations and institutions, with .co.il the standard choice for companies.

The Israel Internet Association administers .il, and its registry arm is known as NIC-Israel. .il was registered on 24 October 1985, making it one of the earliest country-code domains. Registrations are sold through accredited registrars, and ISOC-IL also hosts a DNS root server instance and runs the Israeli Internet Exchange.

Registration is under labels: .co.il for commercial entities, .org.il for non-commercial organisations, .net.il for licensed Israeli internet providers, .ac.il for academic institutions, .k12.il for schools, .muni.il for municipalities, .gov.il for government and .idf.il for the Israel Defense Forces. Direct second-level registration under .il is not offered, and Openprovider reports no IDN support for .co.il.

According to Openprovider, the registry randomly selects new registrations for validation, giving 21 days to supply a company certificate (companies) or photo ID (individuals); failures are deleted without refund. Owners must confirm by email within 24 hours, and nameservers are required at registration. Registrars note that private registration is not available.

The Hebrew-script extension .ישראל was approved by ICANN on 19 May 2020 and delegated on 11 February 2021, with full registration opening on 22 November 2022. Published figures give 285,060 names registered under .il as of 19 August 2023. Dispute procedures are published by ISOC-IL on its website, and the registry says optional resolution may go through an advisory committee.

Who can register

Names are registered at the third level (such as .co.il and .org.il), not directly under .il. No local presence is required, but the registry can validate a registration and ask for documents.

Second-level endings: Mostly under .co.il, .org.il, .ac.il, .gov.il, .muni.il, .k12.il.

Rules and prices change. This summary is general information, not legal advice: confirm the current policy with the registry before you buy. The registry's website is www.isoc.org.il. The official record for .il is in the IANA root zone database.

  • Search for trademarks and for the same name in .com.
  • Say the name out loud: will people type it correctly?
