.tw Domain: Taiwan ccTLD Guide
.tw is the country-code top-level domain for Taiwan.
Overview
Taiwanese businesses, organisations and individuals use it for local sites, and it is also available to many overseas registrants.
The .tw domain was introduced on 31 July 1989. TWNIC, a non-profit appointed by Taiwan's National Communications Commission and the Ministry of Transportation and Communications, runs the registry. Since 1 March 2001 it has stopped registering names directly and works through accredited registrars.
Names can be registered at the second level, such as example.tw, or beneath labels including .com.tw, .net.tw, .org.tw, .idv.tw, .edu.tw, .gov.tw, .game.tw, .ebiz.tw and .club.tw. Chinese-character second levels such as 網路.tw, 組織.tw and 商業.tw also exist. TWNIC and registrars audit names, and ineligible ones may be deleted.
Internationalised names are supported in Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Thai, French and German, using characters from the IANA .tw tables. Chinese names use Big5 characters, need at least two consecutive Chinese characters and cannot mix Traditional and Simplified forms. Names are 2 to 63 characters.
Disputes are handled under TWNIC's Domain Name Dispute Resolution Policy, where a complainant must show that the name is identical or confusingly similar to its identifier, that the registrant has no legitimate interest and that it was registered or used in bad faith. In 2010 ICANN assigned the internationalised top-level domains .台灣 and .台湾.
