.tr Domain: Türkiye ccTLD Guide
.tr is the country-code top-level domain for Türkiye.
Overview
Used by Turkish businesses, institutions and individuals; com.tr is the most common choice for companies.
TRABİS became operational on 14 September 2022 under BTK. Before that, .tr was administered by Nic.TR at Middle East Technical University, which ran it from 1991; .tr was introduced on 17 September 1990, and NIC.tr closed on 12 September 2022. Registration is now through BTK-authorised registrars.
Names can be registered at the second level (example.tr, introduced during a phased allocation from 2023) or beneath labels including com.tr, net.tr, org.tr, info.tr, biz.tr, tv.tr, gen.tr, web.tr, name.tr, bbs.tr and tel.tr. Restricted labels include gov.tr, edu.tr, k12.tr, av.tr, dr.tr, bel.tr, pol.tr and kep.tr. The older ct.tr and nc.tr labels serve Northern Cyprus.
Before 2022, individuals had to provide an ID copy, companies had to show a matching trademark or company name, and foreign applicants had to show business ties to Turkey. Those rules were removed for com.tr, net.tr and org.tr, and the final transitional stage ended in August 2024.
Disputes now go to the Dispute Resolution Service Provider (UÇHS) system, handled by arbitrators or arbitral committees, replacing the earlier mechanism coordinated by the DNS Working Group. Published figures give 1,303,091 registered .tr domains on 13 March 2025.
Who can register
Since the general availability phase that followed the August 2024 end of the transition, com.tr, net.tr and org.tr are reported as open to anyone on a first-come, first-served basis with no documents. Institutional labels such as gov.tr, edu.tr, k12.tr and bel.tr still require documentation.
Second-level endings: Also .com.tr, .org.tr, .gen.tr.
Rules and prices change. This summary is general information, not legal advice: confirm the current policy with the registry before you buy. The registry's website is www.trabis.gov.tr. The official record for .tr is in the IANA root zone database.
